What is Peripheral Arterial Disease?
Peripheral arterial disease is a condition in which plaque buildup on the walls of blood vessels causes them to narrow, contributing to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms including sores and ulcers that won’t heal on their own, burning sensations in the feet, and numbness in the extremities. If left untreated, severe peripheral arterial disease may lead to critical limb ischemia, a condition in which blood flow drastically decreases to areas of the lower body and threatens possible amputation. Peripheral arterial disease is also commonly linked to diabetic vascular disease, a condition in which untreated diabetic symptoms can lead to hardening of the arteries.
APPEARANCE:
Changes in the skin, including decreased skin temperature, or thin, brittle, shiny skin on the legs and feet. Also hair loss, wounds that won't heal. Some patients see reddish-blue discoloration of the extremities and thickened, opaque toenails.

What Causes Peripheral Arterial Disease?
While the cause of peripheral arterial disease tends to be the narrowing of blood vessels and disruption of blood flow, common risk factors that contribute to the onset of this condition include diabetes, obesity, a mostly sedentary lifestyle, and high cholesterol. All of these factors may contribute to declining arterial health and can result in a severe artery condition.
