Venous Disease in South Texas Area

What is a Leg Cramp?

A leg cramp is a sudden contraction of muscles in your leg, typically in your thigh or calf, that causes pain and discomfort for a short period of time. Patients who experience leg cramps often may be suffering from a vascular disease. Chronic leg cramps coupled with itching legs, a leg rash,  or discoloration in the legs may be experiencing the symptoms of a vascular condition. We encourage all of our patients who experience leg cramps on a daily basis to make an appointment to meet with one of our vascular specialists.

What Causes Leg Cramps?

Leg cramps are caused by a contraction of muscles in the thigh or calf. These contractions can typically be attributed to overexertion of the muscles throughout the day and prolonged physical activity. When leg cramps are still occurring regularly while leading a mostly sedentary lifestyle, the cramps may be a subtle symptom of a vein condition. If you lead an inactive lifestyle and are over the age of 50, we encourage you to see one of our vein specialists for diagnostic testing. We’ll be able to find the underlying condition they may be causing your leg cramps and be able to treat them at their source.
