Pelvic Congestion Syndrome in Dallas

What is Pelvic Congestion Syndrome?

Pelvic congestion syndrome is a condition that occurs when women begin to experience varicose veins around their lower abdomen and pelvis. Pelvic congestion syndrome may also be referred to as pelvic varicose veins, as these veins stop functioning properly and start to fill with blood causing a bulging blue or red appearance on the skin. This condition can cause a great deal of discomfort in female patients and result in constant dull pain in the pelvic region. We often suggest our female patients undergo diagnostic testing for pelvic congestion syndrome when experiencing chronic pelvic pain.

SYMPTOMS:

Dull, aching or “dragging” pain in the pelvis or lower back, particularly when first standing and worse around the time of your menstrual period.

WHO IS AT RISK:

Higher risk if you have given birth to more than one child. You may also have a higher risk if other members of your family have it.

DURATION:

Pelvic pain that lasts at least 6 months. This pain often first starts during or after a pregnancy. It may worsen after a later pregnancy.

What Causes Pelvic Congestion Syndrome?

Pelvic congestion syndrome and pelvic varicose veins are caused by the valves in the veins not functioning properly and allowing blood to pool in the veins. This pooling can cause the veins to enlarge, and become swollen and irritated which causes chronic pain. While the exact cause of this condition is still not yet known, most specialists attribute pelvic congestion syndrome to alterations in the pelvic structure during pregnancy and after having given birth. These changes to the system may exacerbate vein disease and cause pelvic congestion syndrome, chronic pelvic pain, and pelvic varicose veins to occur.
