What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?
You may have heard the words “deep vein thrombosis” or the term “DVT” sometime during your life but still may not know exactly what it is. Deep vein thrombosis is a condition in which a blood clot occurs inside one of the veins located deep within your body. While a DVT is often found in the thighs or legs, these dangerous blood clots can also form anywhere in the body under the right conditions. Because a DVT can be so dangerous, we typically encourage patients who experience swelling in the feet, swelling in the legs, foot pain, leg pain, and burning sensations in the feet to get diagnostic testing for this condition.
What Causes Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?
There are four main causes of deep vein thrombosis. Most patients who suffer from DVT have recently undergone surgery, have experienced an injury, are taking blood-clotting medications, or lead a primarily sedentary and inactive lifestyle. All of these factors contribute to poor blood circulation within the body and promote clotting within the body. While none of these factors will undoubtedly cause DVT to occur, we encourage patients under these conditions to be more aware if they develop any symptoms that are traditionally associated with deep vein thrombosis.
