Leg Pain Q & A

What Causes Leg Pain?

A number of vascular conditions can contribute to persistent leg pain. Many people find that leg pain increases as they get older due to age-related changes in the body.

You can experience chronic leg pain from vascular conditions like:

  • Peripheral Artery Disease: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition that develops due to poor blood flow in the legs, usually due to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries. PAD can damage tissues and nerves in the legs and increase risk factors for stroke and heart attack.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms due to poor blood circulation in the legs. Most commonly the result of inactivity, DVT can damage blood vessels, and there‚Äôs a risk of the blood clot breaking away and traveling to other areas of the body, including the lungs.
  • Varicose Veins: Varicose veins are enlarged veins that develop when blood flow in the legs is insufficient. In healthy veins, the valves open and close to prevent blood from flowing backward. When these valves weaken, they can allow blood to flow backward and pool in the vessel, leading to vein enlargement. As veins grow larger, they can become painful and interfere with mobility.

How is Leg Pain Diagnosed?

The team at Precision Vascular offers on-site diagnostic technologies to identify the root cause of your leg pain.

In addition to a full review of your personal and family health history, your provider also examines your legs to pinpoint areas of swelling and tenderness.

To evaluate the blood flow in your legs, your Precision Vascular physician may recommend imaging tests, like an ultrasound or angiogram, that allows them to evaluate the health of your blood vessels and identify blockages.

If you have visible varicose veins, your Precision Vascular provider evaluates their severity to determine if you need treatment.

What Treatments are Available for Leg Pain?

The medical team at Precision Vascular offers a variety of treatment services that are customized to relieve your pain and prevent long-term health complications.

For painful varicose veins, your provider may recommend sclerotherapy, a procedure that involves injecting chemicals into the enlarged vein to destroy it. The blood flows into healthier vessels nearby to improve blood circulation in your legs.

If you have PAD or DVT, your Precision Vascular provider can determine if available minimally invasive treatments are an option, or if you need surgery to repair or remove the affected blood vessels.
