WHAT IS DIABETIC VASCULAR DISEASE?

Diabetic vascular disease is a condition in which the arteries around the body begin to harden from a build-up of sugar and lack of hormones that lower the level of sugar in the blood caused by untreated diabetes. While diabetic vascular disease may affect larger arteries in the body closer to the heart, this condition most commonly affects the smaller arteries closer to the hands, feet, eyes, and kidneys.

As a diabetic, you are at a greater risk for vascular disease than most people. Risks like non-healing ulcers and peripheral arterial disease are two of the most serious concerns. The American Diabetes Association recommends all patients over 50 with diabetes be screened annually for vascular disease, but even younger patients may benefit from preventing issues early on.

WHAT CAUSES DIABETIC VASCULAR DISEASE?

The main cause of diabetic vascular disease is the hardening of arteries caused by diabetic mellitus, or a condition that may occur when sugar levels get too high. This is typically found in patients who have type II diabetes are not treating it properly. Other risk factors that may contribute to diabetic vascular disease include obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and a mostly sedentary lifestyle.

HOW DO DIABETICS KNOW IF THEY HAVE VASCULAR DISEASE?

Sometimes, diabetics are unaware of the signs and symptoms, like general leg weakness or pain in the back of the legs, calves or buttocks with walking or other activities. Many may notice swelling or discoloration in the lower legs, feet and toes.  Sometimes, the numbness and tingling of the lower extremities completely masks other symptoms. Left untreated, the damage done to the arteries can lead to much more serious complications.

That’s why it is important to see a member of the vascular team at Precision Vascular for a diabetic vascular screening. Most major insurance companies cover diabetic vascular screenings.

How Is Peripheral Arterial Disease Related to Diabetes?

Diabetes is a big risk factor for peripheral arterial disease because of the way arteries get damaged by the disease. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a process that causes narrowing or blockage in the blood vessels to the legs and feet.

Symptoms of peripheral arterial disease can be leg weakness, pain with walking or activity, or pain in the back of the legs, calves or buttocks. The legs, ankles and feet can also swell and discolor. Another symptom includes feet and legs falling asleep at night while lying down. Red, purple or dark blue/black discoloration can be a sign of something wrong.  Wounds or even little nicks that are slow to heal or don’t heal at all can be a sign of PAD. Symptoms may be mild at first but can progress to lifestyle limiting leg pain or worse.

The potential for PAD and non-healing diabetic ulcers, wounds or sores is concerning for diabetics. However, if you are a diabetic and get screened, doctors may be able to at least identify the problem and prevent complications or improve your current lifestyle.
